There are four different stages in the game where each stage shows 25 meters of the structure that Donkey Kong has climbed, one stage being 25 meters higher in area than the previous. The player here has three lives, and one life is lost whenever Mario touches any enemy objects or Donkey Kong and falls in a gap or at the end of the platform. These points are awarded according to completing each stage, destroying things with a hammer power-up, leaping over obstacles, removing rivets from platforms, and collecting items such as purses, hats, and parasols. Other than rescuing Pauline, the game also gives scores to the player. Here, Jumpman and Mario must save Pauline, a damsel in distress, from Donkey Kong, the so-called giant ape.

The game focuses on navigating the main character over a series of platforms to climb on a construction site, all while bypassing or jumping over barriers. Nintendo R & D1 developed the game, and Nintendo published it for the Game Boy. Released in 1981, Donkey Kong is an arcade video game and one of the early examples of the platform video games.
